Joy and Sorrow:
It was such a joy the last few times I got to talk with Grandma. On Christmas, Grandma was so upbeat and excited because we got to talk all about the Bible and what she’s been learning. You could hear the passion and joy in her voice. When I told her how much wisdom she was sharing with me, she just humbly gave the credit back to the Lord. We shared and laughed and had the best conversation that left me feeling so inspired!
The day before she passed away she told me that she was at peace and that now she knew why the Lord had her reading her Bible so much. I think maybe she meant because she was having a bigger understanding of His love and purpose. Or maybe it helped her trust Him more. There might have been so many reasons. I didn’t get to find out more and continue the conversation, but hearing those words were the greatest reassurance a person could have while losing their loved one.
Reflecting back on the stories I had heard from my mom, the letters we used to write back and forth to each other in a season of distance, the precious few times we got to share together in person, and our latest conversations we got to have, I can say that Grandma’s story is full of forgiveness, grace, transformation, love, and in the end: peace.
Grandma was by no means perfect. In fact, she’d tell you that she was the farthest from it! But in the end, she knew she was forgiven, and as the Bible says, a new creation:
“Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, He is a new creation; the old has gone, the new has come!”
2 Corinthians 5:17
My overflowing joy that resulted from the latest conversations didn’t go away when she passed away. It’s still in me, but it’s mixed with sorrow...sorrow for not investing more time with her (and with Mom, Grandma’s late daughter), sorrow that others didn’t get to see what I did in her, and sorrow that I won’t have some of my questions answered by her, for now anyway. I’m pretty sure she knew I loved her, but I wish I had gotten to say it once more before she passed away.
Grandma, you fought the good fight and finished your race strong! I will miss you for now and I love you very much!
Love,
Jamie

Anne, I am so sorry for about the loss of your mother. Although words seem to say so little, I hope they in some small way to ease the since of loss that you're experiencing now. Please know that the creator of life can change your sorrow into joy by means of a resurrection. Jesus said: "Do not be amazed at this, for the hour is coming in which all those in the memorial tombs will hear his voice and come out" (John 5:28,29). May the fond memories and cherished times you spent with Dolores bring you comfort. Please accept my deepest sympathy and a warm invitation for you to find more comfort at jw.org
