Nanny,
You’re the weirdest grandmother I had. A force to be reckoned with. You were stubborn and overbearing and very, very specific. But, I get it now. You were blunt, open, honest; things a real friend ought to be. You didn’t want anything lingering, festering between people if bringing it out in the open could resolve it. You took more care than anyone I’ve known to be fair – every child, every friend, every family member to receive equal, that is, equal time, love, presents, treatment according to our category. And, because you were so open and honest and blunt with me, I know why this was so important to you: that no one should ever feel slighted by you, you who had been slighted.
I’m sorry I didn’t communicate with you as well as you worked so hard to do. I hope you understood that you are always with me and all the things you taught me weren’t lost. Use a coupon if you have one, no matter what your income. If you take good care of your machines, you’ll always be able to enjoy them, with minimal expense and surprise. Clean it EVERY time you use it and you’ll never really have to clean it. Water can’t be soft enough and towels are best waterproofed (okay, I don’t follow that, but this is something you taught everyone). You opened the world to me. I saw a military commissary and the fun side of the Shriner’s. I saw a busy ladies’ salon and midday shopping. A girl from the southside got to choose her meals, at any cost, in fancy restaurants, and a fly a plane, even just to Tucson from Phoenix. I remember to send thank you notes and specify how I want my tea. I know how to set a table, enjoy wine with a meal, navigate a train station, cab situation and how to keep my cash safe in a dangerous city. You showed me a world beyond the desert – what real colors look like, what real rain feels like. You brought me to different times and historical places. And, to really be part of a family, you must have a chore.
Thank you for always being a friend. Thank you for respecting me as a real person (at any age). You gave me permission to make my own decisions: to play a song on a table-top juke box, to order French fries AND onion rings as my whole meal, to choose a car for you, to play bartender or handyman and what sight we’d see next. I’ll never be as organized as you, but you did show me how it can be done, without forcing me.
Thank you for making a home for everyone who met you – and all their friends, too. For always having something special for each one of us. For making room on the wall for everyone you met, and their children, too. Thank you for reminding me a small gesture can mean everything. No matter how much I pulled away, I can see clearly now how much you are absolutely entangled in my memories and life.
Love always.
