Ben was a sweet and oh so funny guy. I knew him in Haines Alaska in the late 90's. I'm so sorry for the loss of such a bright light. May you find peace in the warm embrace of memories.

It's still surreal that Ben is not with us anymore. It doesn't feel real and I keep thinking I'll be able to see him on my next visit to Tucson. My condolences go out to the Dumdey family and all of Ben's large list of friends. He seemed to know so many people all around the country, and he always reminded me that he would connect me with one his friends if I ever needed anything. As I was departing for a cross country road trip across the United States, I met with my sister and Ben at the hospital Logan was born at In Spokane, Washington. Ben gave me such reassurance, when he reminded me again that his network of friends would be there for me if I needed anything during my travels. This was also the time that I first laid my eyes on my wonderful nephew Logan. This was a life changing day for me.
Ben was nothing but a friend and nice to me throughout the entire time that I knew him, and I always appreciated getting to see him. My favorite memory with Ben, outside of first meeting Logan, is the time that Ben and I drove together from my Parent's house near Colville, WA to pick up his processions from some of his best friends in Olympia, WA. I had the chance to hear about so many of his adventures throughout his life, his fond memories of his childhood in Maine, his love for gems and stones, some of the challenges he faced throughout his life, and how Logan was the best thing to ever happen to him. It was during this drive that I promised Ben that I would always be there for Logan no matter what happens. In hindsight, I'm so glad that we went on that trip together because it gave me a chance to see how genuine of a person he was. He also had a fantastic sense of humor.
It saddens me that Logan will not have Ben there to help guide him through his life. Ben was such a great father and was always there for the loganator. As one of Logan's uncle's, I promise to always be there for him, and to be a part of the village that will now surround him throughout his life's journey. Logan will always have a special place in my heart, and I intend to be the best person I can be to be able to always show up for him, and to be a good example for Logan.
Rest in peace, Ben. I'll miss you and it was a pleasure to get to know you for the short time that I did.
Again, my deep condolences to the Dumdey family and all of Ben's friends. Most of all, Logan. I wish I could have been there in person. Thank you for opening this wonderful service of remembrance online.
With love,
Joseph Schweitzer

I thought I should tell the story of my and Ben’s time together because it probably will resonate with anyone who knew him. We met as teenagers at Gould Academy. We both grew up in the woods of Maine so we bonded quickly over many wilderness excursions around Bethel. Hiking, mountain biking, and general exploring of our surroundings. I was drawn to Ben’s sense of adventure; everything was an adventure when he was involved! We became fast friends and soon were roommates.
Mostly what I remember of being his roommate was begging him to stop making me laugh because my stomach and face would start aching. But also that I don’t think we ever had an argument that we didn’t talk through. Many heated discussions about the state of society and what should be done to improve things. But always concluding that we have to live well and enjoy life despite our discontent and anger. Life is short! This is a discipline that Ben seemed to grasp and embody easily… This was our mantra as we embarked across the country to new and exciting lives.
So many adventures, traveling, exploring, and meeting so many wonderful people. Laughing the whole way as you can imagine! Hiking mountains, skiing, hot springs, concerts, and just general living was always fun with Ben. Oh, and I have to mention his keen ability of breaking the ice, not only making meeting people easy, but any situation where the energy got tense or a stressful situation arose, he was always there with a jest or some perfect way of lightening the mood. In doing so, bringing people to common ground and ushering in a positive outlook. He just did it instinctively, for the love of peace.
Without going on too many tangents, I would like to suggest remembering Ben by adding some of his ideals to our daily lives. Live well and enjoy life. Find common ground… we are all people in the struggle. Laugh at life and yourself. Trust Ben, it’s funny if you look at it right. Lastly, my hope is that we each could give his son Logan some experiences that exemplify our experiences with Ben and in that way we can pass our friend on to him.

First, I want to say whoever wrote this captured the natural wonder that is Ben. He was all that is good.
The first time I met Ben he roared into my yard on his motorcycle. He was wearing a helmet, so I thought he was someone else when the friend he was with said something about this is Ben. I thought he was another Ben, so I muckled onto him with a big hug. When he took off his helmet, I realized what I had done and said sorry. He said something like "one of the best hugs ever." We were friends from that day on, and he stayed at my house once in a while when he was in the neighborhood. Ben, I will treasure my time with you forever. Ride into the Great Beyond as boldly and honestly as you rode through life and into my heart. RIP, sweet man.
